All was well, the film had entered its final shooting spell and project was on schedule that an issue rose as original makers of Maula Jatt, Sarwar Bhatti and co., accused Lashari and his team of copyright violations!

The case had been going on for some time and according to the latest development the Intellectual Property Tribunal has rejected copyright infringement claims by Bhatti against Bilal Lashari’s reboot of Maula Jatt!

With reports earlier done that Nasir Adeeb who wrote the original movie had indeed sold the rights to Bilal Lashari and Ammara Hikmat, it was producer Sarwar Bhatti who instituted a copyright suit against Lashari, Hikmat and Nasir Adeeb at the Intellectual Property Tribunal, Lahore wanting to restrain the trio to use the Maula Jatt title and character names for their upcoming films. He also asked for injunction against censorship, release and exhibition of Lashari’s film.

After a round of arguments, the issue was narrowed down to the title of the film movie Maula Jatt where the tribunal directed by the Khurram Chughtai who relied on sections 03, 56 of the Copyright Ordinance 1962 and interpreting “cinematographic works”, “acts of infringement”, specifically made a point that the title of the movie did not fall under the categories of protected work as raised by Bhatti.

So, it looks the matter was reserved by the Tribunal has made clear later on, that the operative part of the order was concerned with having no effect on the prospective cinematographic works or whatsoever and strictly prohibited the reproduction or exhibition of the 1979 Maula Jatt till its next hearing!

With Bilal Lashari still working on the project we do not see it releasing any time soon. That established how the ruling does or doesn’t affect the movie is something which we will have to wait and see till the next hearing takes place on November 22nd.
